Memories in Cellulose invites the visitor to step into a workspace of connection and transformation, where microorganisms and humans work together. It is a space to reflect on how we, as individuals, position ourselves within local ecosystems.

In Memories in Cellulose, a relationship between humans and the environment is depicted that is reciprocal rather than exploitative. Combined microbial cultures of plants and humans form cellulose screens through fermentation. This cellulose is a sustainable alternative to plastic, leather, and textiles. At the same time, the fermentation breaks down plant material, which can be returned to the earth.

Projected onto the screens are analog photos. Cultures of microorgansmisms originating from both me and local plants edited the film while growing cellulose screens. The resulting images are three-layerd: double exposure photos of me and the plants, edited by a combined microbal culture. The creative process is also showcased through projections, live fermentation, and material research.

Memories in Cellulose prioritizes co-creation over exploitation, in both the creative process and the use of materials, and thereby envisions a world in which we are more connected to, and on equal footing with, our living environment.
